About TipCalc.info
Our Mission
TipCalc.info exists for one reason: to help you tip fairly based on actual service quality.
We're tired of the guilt-driven tipping culture that pressures people into over-tipping regardless of the experience they received. Tablet screens flipped in your face at the coffee counter. Auto-gratuity sneaked onto your bill. Suggested tip percentages that start at 20% and go up from there. It's gotten out of hand.
What Makes Us Different
Most tip calculators are basic math tools — enter a bill, pick a percentage, done. They don't help you decide what that percentage should be.
We do.
Our calculator asks you to rate the service you received on a scale of 0 to 100, then calculates a fair tip based on that rating. The math is simple and transparent:
- Exceptional service (91-100): 25-30% — go above and beyond for those who did the same for you
- Great service (76-90): 20-25% — solid, attentive, and appreciated
- Good service (61-75): 18-20% — everything was fine, no complaints
- Average service (41-60): 15-18% — standard, nothing special
- Below average (26-40): 10-15% — noticeable issues
- Poor service (11-25): 5-10% — significant problems
- Terrible service (0-10): 0-5% — actively bad experience
Our Values
Honesty over politeness. We won't tell you to tip 20% for bad service just to avoid awkwardness.
Merit-based rewards. Great servers deserve great tips. The system should reward the people who actually earn it.
Consumer empowerment. You work hard for your money. You deserve straight answers about how much to tip, not guilt trips.
Transparency. Our rating-to-tip formula is open and visible. No black boxes, no hidden agendas.
Who We Are
TipCalc.info is a free, ad-supported resource built for everyday people who just want a straightforward answer to a simple question: "How much should I tip?"
We're not backed by the restaurant industry. We're not funded by payment processors. We're an independent tool built by people who believe tipping should be tied to performance, not peer pressure.
How the Algorithm Works
Our calculator uses a piecewise linear mapping to translate your service quality rating (0-100) into a tip percentage. Here's how it works:
The algorithm evaluates your rating against specific breakpoints: 0, 10, 25, 40, 60, 75, 90, and 100. Each breakpoint corresponds to a tip percentage (0%, 5%, 10%, 15%, 18%, 20%, 25%, 30%). If your rating falls between two breakpoints, the calculator interpolates proportionally. For example, a rating of 65 lands between the "60" breakpoint (18% tip) and the "75" breakpoint (20% tip), resulting in approximately 18.7%.
This isn't arbitrary. The breakpoints are designed to align with common tipping norms while rewarding exceptional service and adjusting downward for substandard experiences.
Privacy First
We don't track you. We don't store your data. We don't sell your information. Everything happens locally in your browser — no accounts, no forms, no surveillance.
The only data we collect is basic traffic analytics via Cloudflare (our hosting provider) to understand how people use the site. No cookies, no cross-site tracking, no sneaky scripts. Just a simple tool that does what it says.
Made for Real People
This tool is designed for people who aren't great at mental math, who feel uncomfortable with tipping ambiguity, or who just want a clear, honest answer. If you've ever stood there with your phone, trying to calculate 18% of $47.82 while a server hovers nearby, this tool is for you.
We're here to take the stress out of tipping and put the decision back in your hands.
